Ambrose eyes season-defining victory for Spalding Town at title rivals Sleaford 2nd

Skipper Rob Ambrose has called upon his Spalding Town side to see off title rivals Sleaford 2nd on Saturday – and all but secure the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division crown.

Although Ambrose doesn’t feel Town’s penultimate game of the campaign at Sleaford (1.30pm) is must-win, he is determined to see his charges win the title and secure an instant return to the Lincs ECB Premier League.

Town go into the clash some 28 points ahead of their hosts, but having played two games more.

A big win would leave them in a commanding position ahead of their season finale at home to Stamford on September 3 – and Ambrose doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.

“I’d like to see us win the league and make sure of promotion,” said the Spalding skipper. “That’s been the aim from day one this season.

“Do I think we have to win? Probably not – I can see Sleaford slipping up somewhere.

“But I don’t want us relying on other results. We’ve got things in our own hands and a big win at the weekend would just about see us home.

“I don’t know if second place would still see us promoted, but I’d rather not get into all that.

“Sleaford is a great place to play and we’re all looking forward to the game. What we don’t want is rain – it can rain all it wants after next Saturday, but we don’t want any against Sleaford or Stamford!”

Ambrose and his side will travel to Sleaford in fantastic form, having thrashed Billingborough by 186 runs last weekend (see page 38).

They picked up 20 points with a six-wicket win over Sleaford 2nd back on June 11, with a repeat of that exactly what Ambrose is looking for.

The second-placed side have won all seven of their completed games since that defeat, though.

A win for the hosts would insert them as favourites for the title, too.

Spalding welcome back Tim Norris to what will be a near full-strength squad on Saturday, with only bowler Cameron Roy unavailable.
