Hockey: Long Sutton 2nd go 11 points clear at summit after latest victory

Long Sutton 2nd’s relentless charge towards the East Men’s Hockey League Division 4NW crown continued on Saturday.

They defeated hosts Alford 1st 3-0 to go 11 points clear at the summit, with James Collingwood-Smith, McKenzie East and Luke Jackson all on target.

Second-placed Spalding 3rd were also on winning form in 4NW, seeing off Kettering 2nd 3-0.

Ben Scholes notched a double for them, with Jeremy Watt also netting.

In the same division, Spalding 2nd are three points further back after collecting a 3-0 success of their own at Bourne Deeping 3rd.

Dave Burrell, Ryan Mountney and Glenn Richardson were the Spalding scorers.

Up in Premier B, Spalding 1st are battling to prevent a second relegation on the spin.

They are third from bottom after suffering a crushing 9-1 home defeat against third-placed IES 1st at Glen Park.

Stuart Cunnington, as ever, was the sole scorer in a game that Spalding will want to put behind them.

There was also a defeat for Long Sutton 1st in Division 2N, as they went down 2-1 against rivals Pelicans 1st at the Peele Leisure Centre. Dan Batten was the sole Sutton scorer, with Harry Synnott named as man of the match.

Meanwhile, it was a day to forget for Spalding 4th in Division 5NW.

They were handed a 6-0 reverse at March Town 2nd and are now just six points above the bottom two in the standings.

There was better news for Spalding 5th in Division 6NW (N), as they picked off hosts Leadenham 3rd 2-0.
Joshua Haines and Darren Willson netted.

Also 2-0 winners in the same division were Long Sutton 3rd, as they beat CoP 8th with goals from Steve Smith and Ian White.

  • Spalding Poachers 1st slipped into the bottom two of East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW after losing 2-1 against St Ives 2nd. Kelly Slater got their solitary goal.

In the same division, Long Sutton 1st edged above the Poachers after a 0-0 draw against Cambs City 4th.

In Division 3NW, Spalding 2nd picked up a 1-0 at Royston 1st after a goal from Eva Keyes.

Down in Division 4NW (N), Spalding Poachers 3rd thrashed Woodhall Spa 8-1 after goals from Pippa Bembridge, Terri Bateman (2), Kate Amess (2), Sharon Amess, Sam Foston and Rachel Perkins.

Sutton 2nd won 2-0 at Bourne Deeping 3rd with Charlie Leuty and Jo Bland getting the goals.
