751 days of pain are finally over as Pinchbeck United clinch win

Pinchbeck United 3 Selston 1

Two goals from skipper Dan Worthington helped Pinchbeck secure their first competitive victory under boss Lewis Thorogood as they came from behind to beat Selston 3-1 on Saturday – ending a winless sequence of 751 days.

The Knights, who hadn’t won a league game in each of the last two seasons that were cut short due to COVID-19, fell behind in the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North clash when Sean Gregory fired home a cracker for Selston on ten minutes.

But Pinchbeck showed their mettle and duly levelled matters at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field when Worthing arrived late at the back post to score on 26 minutes.

That’s how it stayed up until the 74th minute, when Krisztian Gagyi’s long-range free-kick came back off the woodwork and Harry Peasgood was on hand to turn home the rebound for his first goal for the Knights.

Not done there, Pinchbeck sealed a very welcome three points when Worthington tapped home his second of the day from close range with just ten minutes left.

Delighted boss Thorogood said: “I’m told the last win before this was against Sleaford Town on August 7, 2019! It’s great to have finally broken that hoodoo for the club.

“This win is the culmination of months of hard work on and off the pitch here at the club. But it’s just that; one win.

“We’ll not get overly carried away, but it’s great to be able to celebrate three points with the lads.

“However, if you’d asked me if we were going to win the game after ten minutes, I’d probably not have been overly confident.

“We conceded exactly the same kind of goal as we did in the 1-0 defeat against Deeping, giving their lad way to much space to smash one home from long range.

“Credit to the lads, though, we played some really good football and it was one of the first time I’ve seen them play with genuine fluency going forward.

“Even when it went 3-1, we could have scored more.

“In the end, we deserved the win and I’m really pleased for everybody associated with the club.

“Now we need to use this result as a moment we can build on and attempt to get more positive results moving forward.

“As ever, we now move onto the next game and we’ll be looking to get a good run going.”
