WINNING SMILES: St Norbert’s captain Jude Thompson holds the Division One trophy, with fellow winners (back, from left) Spalding St John the Baptist Primary (Division Two), Weston Hills Primary (Division Three) and Spalding Monks House Primary (Division Four).

160 pupils turn on the style in schools’ hockey tournament

The finals of the Spalding Primary Schools Hockey Tournaments were held at Glen Park, Surfleet on Friday (May 15).

Around 160 schoolchildren played in a great spirit throughout, with plenty of skill, action and keenly-contested hockey on show.
Twenty teams from 12 local primary schools were divided into four graded leagues of five teams from beginner to experienced levels.

Division 1: Moulton’s John Harrox School and Spalding’s St Norbert’s won their three opening games and faced each other in a showdown.
When John Harrox went 2-1 up inside the last two minutes, it looked like they would retain the trophy. However, in a frantic and dramatic closing period, St Norbert’s equalised with just ten seconds left to win the trophy.
Pinchbeck East won two games to finish in third spot.

Division 2: St John’s and Gosberton Academy led from the start in this league with two impressive wins apiece in their opening games. St John’s managed a 4-0 win over Pinchbeck East B to win by the smallest possible goal difference.
Ayscoughfee A and Wyberton put in some excellent performances in midfield but lacked the finishing up front.

Division 3: Weston Hills were dominant, winning all four of their games whilst scoring 16 times. Whilst St Norbert’s B ran them close in their game, Weston Hills were worthy winners of this league ahead of John Harrox B who won their other 3 games.
St Norbert’s B and Ayscoughfee B fought hard to take 3rd and 4th places respectively whilst brave Surfleet Primary battled hard but found life in this league a bit tough.

Division 4: Spalding Monks House won with a perfect record. They were the only team in the tournament not to concede a goal.
Two wins and a draw earned Gosberton Academy’s B team a well earned runners up place with Wyberton B finishing in third place having secured three draws. Boston St Mary’s B and John Harrox C teams comprised mainly of younger players who will have learned a lot.
